Gallery announcement

I am pleased to announce a new collaboration with Adler and Moriarty gallery.

I look forward to a fruitful partnership and to sharing incredible art experiences with you.

Adler and Moriarty

We at Adler & Moriarty represent Simon James, an English-born, Munich‑based artist whose singular practice reimagines painting as two-dimensional relief style sculpture. Working primarily with layers of gesso applied, carved, sanded, and sealed with wax, James builds rich, topographical surfaces that defy easy genre classification and embody both gesture and archaeology, mental, technical and physical, into the past.

His process is intensely personal: through repeated layering and erosion, James excavates memory and identity, shaping each composition into a composite of presence and absence. The result are works that are tactile, memory‑laden, and visually arresting, perfect for exhibition programmes exploring materiality, process, or the art‑as‑archive debate .

Recent works (2022–2025) demonstrate his evolution in scale and technique, and recent sales attest to growing collector interest.

We believe Simon James’ unique visual language, where the conscious and unconscious is caught in layers of gesso, and then is released by selective delving into these layers to become tactile sculpture, would enrich your institution’s contemporary programme or collection. We invite you to explore his key works in the portfolio attached.
